What is the largest flying animal?
The largest flying animal is the Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans). On average an adult albatross can have a wingspan of around 12 feet (3.6 meters) and weigh up to 25 pounds (11 kilograms). However some individuals have been known to reach wingspans of up to 12.5 feet (3.8 meters) and weigh as much as 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms).
Despite their massive size albatrosses are incredibly agile and efficient flyers with the ability to cover long distances over the open ocean in search of food and mates. They are also known for their impressive gliding abilities which allow them to stay aloft for hours without flapping their wings.
Its worth noting that while the Wandering Albatross is the largest flying animal its not the heaviest. That title belongs to the ostrich which can weigh up to 320 pounds (145 kilograms) and reach heights of over 9 feet (2.7 meters).
