What is the largest flying animal that exists today?
The largest flying animal that exists today is the Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans). It has a wingspan of up to 12 feet (3.6 meters) and can weigh up to 25 pounds (11 kilograms). Despite its size the Wandering Albatross is able to cover great distances over the ocean by using wind currents and thermals to stay aloft for long periods of time.
The largest bird in the world by wingspan is actually a different species. The Great Albatrosss cousin is also a contender: the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) has an impressive wingspan but not as large as that of the Wandering Albatross; it reaches up to 10 feet (3 meters).
